Instructions for Paper Assignment on:Arthur Koestler, Darkness at Noon
In an afterword to the novel, Koestler wrote that critics who considered the
“Rubashov theory of the confessions” to be too far-fetched had “no inkling
of the magic attraction of totalitarian ideologies.”
But why does Rubashov confess at the end of the novel? And how does
the book explain why people supported the totalitarian system under
Stalin? Do you find its explanation convincing? Why or why not?
